A parking lot argument between a white and black driver ends with an unarmed man dead. What followed was Zero riots, media fairness, and a justice system that worked. There’s a disturbing reason why.
I don’t believe Melissa Payne, a black woman, should be charged with a crime for shooting an unarmed white man over a Florida Walmart parking space.
Florida is a Stand Your Ground state. She was legally armed. She warned Bart DiGuglielmo repeatedly to back off. Instead, video shows him continuing to advance as she backed away.
Once somebody has a gun pointed at you and is screaming at you to stop, you STOP. Show your hands. Back away. De-escalate. You do not keep advancing.
So legally, I understand why prosecutors say she was justified.
But legally justified does not mean the shooting had to happen.
He was unarmed. She had a gun. There were opportunities for BOTH of them to bring the temperature down. Nobody should die over a Walmart parking space.
But imagine this. What if the roles and races were reversed?
Imagine an angry confrontation ends with an armed WHITE MAN shooting and killing an UNARMED BLACK WOMAN in a Walmart parking lot.
Do you honestly believe the coverage would look like it does?
The national media would descend on Broward County. Stand Your Ground would once again be put on trial. Race would dominate every headline. Politicians and activists would be demanding justice before the investigation was finished.
But here, the shooter is a black woman and the dead, unarmed man is white.
Suddenly the media discovers nuance.
That hypocrisy deserves to be exposed.
This isn’t about making Melissa Payne a villain. I don’t believe she is a criminal. It’s about applying the SAME standard no matter the race of the shooter and no matter the race of the person who dies.
